Newborn Session Prep Guide
My style of newborn photography is simplistic as your new bundle of joy is the center of attention for your images. We will incorporate in a couple of baskets or boxes etc and then we will move onto one or two special outfits that you may have brought. I provide the wraps, backdrops and head band / hat for your session, along with the baskets / boxes that are available in our studio. If you have other desires on props or outfits please contact me directly prior to your session so we can discuss.
Since the arrival of your baby is typically unpredictable, I will reserve space on my calendar around the time of your due date to accommodate early or late arrivals. Please contact me as soon as baby arrives in order to schedule a date and time that is within 7-21 days after birth. Soon to be moms typically book session when they are in their 7th month
After 21 days babies become more alert causing them to startle more easily. They’ve also discovered the joys of stretching (which makes posing much harder!) and they start developing baby acne.
This is not to say that I can’t photograph older babies, but you may not get the same curled up sleepy poses.
Here’s a guide for you to help you understand how the session will go, and hopefully answer any questions you may have. If it doesn’t, just let me know! This is my 15th year photographing newborns and I have completed 11 safety and posing classes which have lent me to have a wonderful workflow that works great in the studio. I find preparation is the key to success !
This session may last 2-3 hours. It will depend on babies temperament. If baby sleeps the entire time I may be able to finish just shy of 2 hours, however if baby is fussy it will definitely be three. We will take our time and never rush! Don’t worry if your baby gets fussy - babies just aren’t used to being handled, posed and moved so much. Your baby might also be afraid of being in a new place, next to me, a strange lady who isn’t mom. We will take plenty of breaks for feeding and snuggles. If at anytime during the session you feel your baby needs a break, just say so.
During the session if your baby starts to get fussy, I will attempt to calm your newborn in the position they are currently in. Please let me know if at anytime you become uncomfortable with me doing so.
Please know that newborns will pee and poo during the session. It is not a matter of if, but when. Don’t worry if this happens as it is all expected, I will just clean up and move on. All of my props are washed after every session.
To keep baby warm and sleepy, my studio is kept at a very warm temperature. I advise that you come in light clothing if you plan to sit in the studio with me.
Along with keeping newborns warm, having a full belly is key to making sure they stay sleepy. You may need to feed your baby more frequently during the session to calm them and keep them asleep as they burn more calories the more they are handled and they move around. I will also have white noise running in the background to help keep your newborn from startling as easy.
I ask that you please feed your baby right before your session. If you need to take a little time to top them up once you arrive, that is fine.
Please have baby in loose clothing, that does not go over the head. Button and zip up pajamas are perfect for your session day. Try and put diapers on loosely before your session, to avoid diaper lines.
Pacifiers can be a life saver, even if your baby doesn’t currently use one, if you have one, please bring it to your session.
If baby is bottle fed, please make sure to bring plenty of milk or formula.
For parents and siblings we suggest clothing that is solid in color without logos or prints. White shirts work wonderfully, with coordinating jeans and bare feet.
